The Internet at large also has arguments against them. I already have written some guidelines and tips about them and also explored alternatives. They won't necessarily save you from slow build times, though. Submodules can be convenient, especially for dynamic languages. If you can't or don't want to use a dependency tool, git has a facility to handle submodules. A perfect solution to the problem is far from here. ![]() In some setups (like ours) updating APIs requires a milestone release of the product, and then the plugin, and then the product again We've probably missed a few things, but you get the idea.Refactoring when not all the source is available in a single repository.Hinders the discoverability of repositories. It requires manually setting up new builds for each component.Takes time and can fail for lots of stupid reasons.Making a change to a component requires a release.Splitting components into separate repositories comes with some serious pain. Basically I think most people need to worry about build times at some point, which is why you should use a dependency management tool. This by the way means submodules (see below) lend themselves very well to dynamic languages for example. But as the project grows, that may result in your build to be too slow – at which point you need "caching," which is where dependency management comes in. Simplistically at the start of a project everything is packed in one build. Some of these tools have limitations and make assumptions that are not optimal, but are proven and viable. At build time the tool of choice will pull the right versions of the dependencies so that your main project can be built. In Go the build/dependency infrastructure is somewhat built into the language (though people have been working on a more complete solution, see godep) For our Git server Bitbucket Server we use both Maven and Bower.Ivy (or some custom CMake action) for C++ (Updated!).Pip and requirements.txt if you use Python.Bower, Component.io, etc if you use Javascript (Updated!).There is one for (almost) every technology stack out there. Keep your modules separated in individual repositories and manage their interdependency using a tool built for the job. First choice: Use an appropriate build/dependency tool instead of gitĪ dependency management tool is my current recommended way forward to handle the growing pains and the build times of sizeable projects. So the following are just guidelines so that you can devise your own approach. Once a project grows over a certain size, it makes sense to split it in logical components, but don't wait to have a 100 million plus lines of code in a single repository before you do. ![]() Please realize that there is no silver bullet – in git or otherwise – that will painlessly solve all the issues related with project dependencies. Jokes aside, let me answer with broad strokes first and dig deeper afterwards. So back to the question: How do you track and manage project dependencies with git? ![]() Painting with broad strokes: guidelines and sub-optimal solutions But it's a relatively natural – sometimes mandatory – step in the evolution of a software project for at least two major reasons: increasing build times, and shared dependencies between projects. ![]() Having separate repositories as opposed to having a single one can make some things harder. Obviously project dependencies and build infrastructure are two intertwined areas, and even internally at Atlassian a discussion sparked on the "Future of Builds". The topic appears to be a big pain point for many software teams adopting git, so in this article I'll try to shed some light on the issue. What's the best way to handle those with git? How do you split a very big repository in smaller components using git? These are some examples of the most asked questions we got at the European leg of our recent Getting Git Right tour. Currently we manage those with svn:externals. How do you handle project dependencies with git? Given the variety of activities that go on in a family room, window placement can be a challenge. Most dining rooms are used at night, so do you really need a giant window to look through when it’s dark outside? An increasing number of homeowners are choosing to put dining spaces in areas with few or no windows, relying on art, a fireplace, or even furniture to create more valuable visual interest when the sun goes down. Windows in the dining room should be thought about with a great deal of circumspection. ![]() Integrate them by aligning the tops of the openings and using coordinating trim. Ganged together, windows and doors can create a sense of openness and bring in the outdoors in a way that makes a home seem larger than its actual size. Many living rooms also contain glass doors to decks or patios. Big, south-facing windows can fill all the spaces feeding off the living room with bright, ambient light just be aware of the potential for overheating in summer. For example, if your living room faces a tight cul-de-sac, the view of other people’s cars might not be the best use of a large array of windows. The living room is typically one of the largest rooms in the house and therefore can accept the biggest windows, but that makes sense only if there’s something to look at. Here are a few guidelines for thinking about windows on a room-by-room basis. Match the Window to the Roomĭifferent areas of the house have different requirements for windows. A modern plate-glass window looks out of place in a perfectly symmetrical antique facade. When adding new windows to an existing wall, the trick is to keep the treatment consistent, with compatible trim, grille patterns, and muntin style. On the flip side, the best way to guard against heat gain in warm weather, especially with south-facing windows, is to shade the glass with long overhangs so that the high angle of the sun during summer cannot penetrate deeply into your room. For maximum comfort in cold climates, it may be necessary to have large areas of glass directly washed by a heat source, such as convective heat from a radiator or blown heat from a forced-air system (just know that this will raise your heating bill). No matter how well insulated, large panes of glass will suck heat in winter and invite it in during summer. Today’s windows are far superior to their older counterparts in terms of blocking unwanted drafts, but you still need to take into account radiant heating and cooling. Similarly, if you know in which direction the prevailing wind blows, you can increase the amount of operable glass in that area, allowing for more passive ventilation and cutting down on air-conditioning bills. For instance, windows facing east and west accept the very low angle of spring and fall sunlight, which can often be blinding - especially troublesome in a room used for watching television or working on a computer.įor windows on those walls, you will need shades or curtains, or to set the sill more than 4 feet off the floor to reduce glare. ![]() What works best on the outside to give your house a sense of scale and visual identity isn’t always ideal on the inside, where windows should respond to how rooms are used and the orientation of the house to the sun and wind. If you give that outsized window its own wall, and keep the trim and muntins simpatico with those in the rest of the house, you can enjoy your big view without compromising the integrity of your home’s design. The big mistake is to treat windows so differently that something is clearly “wrong” - say, a plate-glass window set directly adjacent to a double-hung eight-over-eight Colonial window. If your windows are consistent in the way they are treated - basic type, grille patterns, and trim - they can handle great variations in quantity and style. But the pattern of windows on the front of your house doesn’t have to be repeated on all the other sides. For many people that means a traditional, symmetrical approach, especially in a neighborhood where existing homes set a style you would like to respect (or is mandated by code). The front of a house should be friendly to visitors and convey a sense of the home’s inhabitants. The Front Doesn’t Have to Determine All the Other Sides (Fortunately, many street-scapes aren’t worth bringing inside.) 2. In most traditional homes, that means away from the street-facing facade. ![]() It’s not wrong to think about big windows facing wonderful views in even the most historically “correct” houses - you just have to pick your spots wisely. Does that mean that only modern houses can feature large expanses of glass? No. ![]() Pretty much everything we look for in a pumpkin soup (and we’ve tried a lot of pumpkin soup recipes over the years!). What makes it so special? (AP) - As President Joe Biden prepares a final decision on the huge Willow oil project in Alaska, his administration announced he will prevent or limit oil drilling in 16 million acres in Alaska and the Arctic Ocean. The climate crisis is already harming Americans today - from extreme weather to higher food and energy bills to increased public health threats. Plans announced Sunday night will bar drilling in nearly 3 million acres of the Beaufort Sea - closing it off from oil exploration - and limit drilling in more than 13 million acres in a vast swath of land known as the National Petroleum Reserve - Alaska. The moves come as regulators prepare to announce a final decision on t he $8 billion Willow project, a controversial oil drilling plan pushed by ConocoPhillips in the petroleum reserve. Climate activists have rallied against project, calling it a “carbon bomb” that would be a betrayal of Biden's campaign pledges to curb new oil and gas drilling. By 2030, the report found, the world’s nations are planning to produce 240 percent more coal, 57 percent more oil and 71 percent more natural gas than would. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska, called Willow “one of the biggest, most important resource development projects in our state’s history.” Meanwhile, Alaska lawmakers, unions and indigenous communities have pressured Biden to approve the project, saying it would bring much-needed jobs and billions of dollars in taxes and mitigation funds to the vast, snow- and ice-covered region nearly 600 miles (965 kilometers) from Anchorage. At the same time, many of the oil wells and coal mines now being approved and developed could prove deeply unprofitable if demand for fossil fuels shrinks, creating economic disruption. “Cooperation goes both ways,″ she told reporters. Haaland, who fought the Willow project as a member of Congress, has the final decision on whether to approve it, although top White House climate officials are likely to be involved, with input from Biden himself. The White House said no final decision on Willow has been reached. Under the conservation plan announced Sunday, Biden will bar drilling in nearly 3 million acres of the Arctic Ocean, and impose new protections in the petroleum reserve. President Biden’s administration opened the door Friday to more offshore oil and gas drilling in federal waters over the next five years, setting a potential course for future U.S. The withdrawal of the offshore area ensures that important habitat for whales, seals, polar bears and other wildlife "will be protected in perpetuity from extractive development,'' the White House said in a statement. The action completes protections for the entire Beaufort Sea Planning Area, building upon President Barack Obama’s 2016 withdrawal of the Chukchi Sea Planning Area and the majority of the Beaufort Sea, the White House said. Separately, the administration moved to protect more than 13 million acres within the petroleum reserve, a 23-million acre chunk of land on Alaska’s North Slope set aside a century ago for future oil production. The proposed Willow project is within the reserve, and ConocoPhillips has long held leases for the site. ![]() “No man is entitled to the blessings of freedom unless he be vigilant in its preservation.” – Douglas MacArthur.“Who kept the faith and fought the fight the glory theirs, the duty ours.” – Wallace Bruce.“Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.” – Franklin D.“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.” – Elmer Davis. We honor the dead best by treating the living well.” – Jennifer M.
